The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) will likely form an alliance with the nationalists for the March local elections. Meanwhile. Hurriyet reports that a dean at a university in Konya had to resign after tweeting that he would not vote for any female candidates because “being a good housewife is much more necessary than being a minister, mayor or successful businesswoman.”

Campaigning for the European Parliament elections continues vigorously. Yanis Varoufakis, the former Greek finance minister, plans to run in Germany for the European Parliament on the list of the Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 party, or DiEM25, whose supporters include the likes of Julian Assange and Noam Chomsky. This weekend, the party will choose its other candidates. Varoufakis plans to campaign around Europe as a “Spitzenkandidat,” or leading candidate, for the party.
