Moldova Parliamentary - February 24, 2019

Jamestown Foundation’s Mihai Popșoi analyzes the state of play ahead of Moldova’s parliamentary elections: “Needless to say, the February 24 elections will widely be seen as a final litmus test on the health of Moldovan democracy. If a modicum of free and fair elections is ensured, voters will have a chance to decide between a return to democracy and cementing the hybrid regime, the latter of which could regress further into outright authoritarianism.”

Maia Sandu, chair of the center-right pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS), discusses the government’s increasing pressure on and intimidation of the opposition ahead of the elections, and Russia’s continued interference in Moldovan politics.

Balkan Insight reports: “The ruling party is placing loyalists and ‘recycled’ ex-communists in key positions in the courts before the elections to help it secure a new mandate, experts warn.”

Ukraine Presidential - March 2019

United States Institute of Peace conducted an assessment of election violence risk in Ukraine. The full report will be released in February, but they published a short piece outlining how “[tensions] with Russia, criminal networks and far-right extremists raise the risk of violence.”

Kyiv Post reports: “Local elections in ten Ukrainian regions will be held after martial law ends, according to Ukrainian Central Elections Commission Secretary Natalia Bernatska.” Meanwhile, Kyiv Post also reports: “High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini has said the local elections in Ukraine must take place despite the state of martial law imposed in ten regions of Ukraine.”

Armenia Snap Parliamentary - December 9, 2018

Will Armenian politics reform following the “Velvet Revolution”? The Economist thinks so – Armenia won their Country of the Year award for progress: “[An] ancient and often misruled nation in a turbulent region has a chance of democracy and renewal. For that reason, Armenia is our country of the year. Shnorhavorum yem!”

Georgia Presidential - November 28, 2018

Georgian journalist Ani Chkhikvadze argues that although the Kremlin-friendly Georgian Dream coalition’s preferred presidential candidate won the presidency (in an election characterized by irregularities) by demonizing pro-democracy former president Mikheil Saakashvili, Georgian Dream’s governing record has been unremarkable and Georgian voters could rapidly grow weary of them.
