Armenia Snap Parliamentary - December 9, 2018

Could Armenia be taking steps – albeit slowly – toward a politics based on ideology instead of personality?

Georgia

Thousands of Georgians protested alleged election irregularities on Sunday, as the opposition challenges the results in court. More protests are planned for later in December. The OSCE noted an imbalanced playing field and improper use of administrative resources by the incumbent (given the OSCE’s tradition of wording reports diplomatically, this means that they observed serious issues). Three Georgian professors give their take on the consequences of the election results. Luis Navarro, former Georgia country director for the National Democratic Institute, an American NGO, shares his thoughts via the Atlantic Council.

Belarus

Political analyst RobThomas reports that Belarusian authorities are looking to deport a spokeswoman for the opposition United Civil Party, and has stepped up its crackdown on independent media. While the Lukashenko regime has opened up a bit in recent years, and the opposition won two seats in parliament in 2016, Belarus remains an authoritarian state.

Kazakhstan
